The first Government school Tanganyika was built in Tanga. By then Tanganyika was known as "Deutsch-Osta-frika" during Germany Colonial period. The school was built in 1893, 'Gouv.  Schule ', currently known as "Old Tanga Secondary School" .

This is Tanga - between the last decade of 19th century and the first decade of 20th. The street seen in the picture was called "Kaiser Strasse" during German Colonial rule, after the First World War in 1917 Britains had to change the name to "Kings Street", and when Tanganyika attained her political independence in 1961 it was officially renamed as "Independence Avenue".  Welcome at  Urithi Tanga Museum  for more details. Saint Paul Illaire - he is German with French name, 'Illaire', his parents are said to have been Religious refugees (Protestants) from France 1700s and found their Refugee in Prussia when it was a German territory. He was born in German (Berlin) Jan, 12 1860 and died in Dec, 12 1940. In 1891, German Reich took over administration of Great German East Africa and Saint Paul Illaire became the District Official of Tanga, he ran the office from 1891 - 1910.His residence is now kn own as "PALM COURT HOTEL" in Tanga. During his stay in Tanga, he did some botanic researches and discovered one of the most prominent beautiful flower in the rich humus of Usambara mountains in Lushoto. He named the flower as 'Usambara violate' or 'African violate'. He discovered the flower in 1893. The flower is famous in Europe and America today as it has gone through different cross breedings and produced new beautiful species, and in Lushoto Tanga, holds the only genu
